History of Warrenton:
Warrenton was established in 1759 on the frontier of English civilization and was named for General Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero.. By 1790, a courthouse, jail, and academy had all been built in Warrenton. During the civil war, many of the churches and schools in Warrenton served as makeshift hospitals for soldiers wounded in the many bloody battles that occurred in the area.
Today, Warrenton is a suburb just an hour from the heart of Washington, DC and is the county seat of Fauquier County. Drive around Warrenton, and you will see many historical markers identifying different landmarks in the area, including the Warren Green Hotel (now rebuilt), which has served many famous figures, including James Monroe and Andrew Jackson. The historical nature of the town has led to the rise of tourism as an economic necessity, causing many hotels, restaurants and bed & breakfasts to be opened in Warrenton.
Warrenton is proud of its historicity and has regulations in place to maintain the historical feel in some areas. Because it is located so close to Washington, DC, the cost of living is higher than in most areas. With the current economic state, these two factors have made it very difficult for many residents to keep up with the repairs their homes so desperately need.
Fun Facts About Warrenton:
